CHAPTER TEN

“It’s him, I know it is.”

Elle stared at Tessa, up and pacing back and forth in front of the fire. A log fell into the grate, and she jumped sideways as if someone had fired a gun.

“We don’t know that. I’d be more worried about the fact that we may have a rogue bear wandering the woods. They’re especially dangerous this time of year right before hibernation. If it’s hurt, it could be hungry and desperate—not a good mix.” Elle thought about the boy, and how close the bear had been to the child. Maybe it had been a different black bear.

Tessa shook her head, wrapping her arms around her belly protectively. “You don’t know Cady like I do. He considers me his property and he’ll do whatever he sees necessary to get me, us, back.”

“We aren’t going to let anything happen to you.”

She stopped and stared, shaking her head slowly. “You won’t be able to stop him.”

“Not me, Tessa—we. Together, we’ll keep you safe.”

She sighed and closed her eyes briefly. “You don't know that. And what if you get hurt, any of you? Don’t you see? It would just be safer for everyone if I left before it’s too late.”

“And go where? You’re nine months pregnant, due in a matter of weeks. What do you plan to do if you go?”

“It’s not your problem.”

Mia chose that moment to stop in front of a pacing Tessa, her head tilted to the side as if she were listening to something only she could hear. Tessa bent and cupped her blocky head with slim fingers, placing a soft kiss on the top of her head. “Sweet baby girl,” she murmured. “I wish life were as simple and sweet as you.”

Elle smiled softly. “Regardless of how you ended up here, or what you imagine my reservations were about having you, you became our responsibility when we let you stay. You have nowhere to run, Tessa. We’re your best bet. If he comes, we finish things here.”

“He won’t come alone. He’ll have company and they’ll be armed and skilled in fighting.”

“Then at least we won’t be bored. You can do us a solid, though, and let us know a little more about what we are up against. Give us the rest of the story, Tessa. Tell us about you, and the sister you left behind, and why. Knowledge is power, Tessa, and you’ve been pretty stingy with it.”

Tessa gave a short, impatient laugh. “I warn you—it’s crazy stuff, all of it. I don’t even know what to say, where to start...”

Elle took a seat in a small armchair, indicating the other with a wave of her hand. Mia nuzzled her arm and huddled between her legs, placing her head on her knee, and eying Tessa curiously. “Well, the beginning is usually a good place to start. Let’s go from there.
